Guest Bedroom Makeover

#ThrowbackThursday - We are throwing it back today to a guest bedroom makeover we completed last year for a friend/client of ours! We re-did this entire room for $1,000 (not including our design cost!) In case you see anything you like, we put together a product source link for all of the big purchase items (i.e. area rug, lamps, wall art, bedding) that you can find at the end of this article to help you shop quickly! All other smaller decor items were found locally at stores like TJ Maxx/Home Goods, Hobby Lobby, Tuesday Morning, and Target. This is also a great example of how chalk paint can transform your furniture on the cheap!

Let’s dive in!

My favorite thing about this room is the beautiful (and inexpensive) area rug and the chalk paint furniture transformation we did. The area rug adds color and pattern to the room without being too permanent. We kept the rest of the colors in the room calming and neutral for guests so that they felt like they could rest in this retreat at the end of the day.

Take a look at the “Before” picture below to understand the total transformation…

Our client had IKEA furniture that she wanted to re-use in order to stay within budget, so we decided to use Annie Sloan chalk paint to give the furniture a face lift. We also replaced the cabinet hardware on the dresser to update it.

Our client’s wood flooring was almost the same color as the furniture so we tried to use an area rug to break up the brownish orange color. The dark grey chalk paint really makes the furniture pop against the flooring too.

For the window, we created a DIY faux roman shade to add some texture and make the room feel finished. Behind the roman shade is a real wood shade that guests can use for privacy, but we wanted a roman shade for the added softness and had to do it within budget. We aren’t going to go into a ton of details on how we created it within this article but there are a ton of DIY roman shade blog posts out there if you are interested in trying your own! Overall, we found textured white fabric at Joann’s, and used fabric glue and scissors to finish the edges and make it the right size for this window. We then used 3 thin tension rods to hang it in the window and create the folds.

We accented the walls with wood and metal art because we wanted to bring in neutral colors but add texture. Also, these pieces aren’t too personal for a guest bedroom. The wood and metal wall art on the left of the window actually has small picture clips on it, and the intention was to hang postcards from around the world that my client had collected on her travels. (She and her husband are avid travelers!)

The basket on the floor has extra bath towels rolled up for guests, but they could also put extra blankets in the basket too.

We left plenty of dresser space for guests to throw their personal items while visiting.

As a design rule, one of the biggest impacts for any bedroom is to add side tables and matching lamps to the sides of the bed. This adds functionality (giving your guests a place to sit their personal items and providing soft, additional lighting) while also gives the room a symmetrical and finished look.

We found these cute side tables and lamps at Home Goods, along with the faux plant and candle for decor. We kept the side table decor simple but wanted it to feel home-y so we didn’t want to leave it blank. Faux (or real) greenery makes the room feel lived in and comfortable. Candles are a nice touch in case you want to light them prior to your guests arriving to give the room a welcoming smell.
